How to Clean Out Your Garage in a Single Weekend

Most garage cleanouts fail for the same reason: people start sorting before they start emptying. You open a box, get absorbed, and four hours later you have cleared one shelf and made the floor worse. This is the order that actually works, and it fits in a weekend.

Before You Start: Two Things Worth Doing

Check the weather. You are going to put everything on the driveway, and rain ends the day.

And book your haul-away for the end of day two before you begin. This is the single biggest difference between a garage that gets cleaned out and a garage that gets rearranged. If there is a truck coming Sunday afternoon, the pile leaves. If there is not, the pile migrates back inside by Wednesday.

Saturday Morning: Empty It, Do Not Sort It

Take everything out onto the driveway. Everything. Do not evaluate anything yet, do not open boxes, do not get sentimental about the camping gear. The only decision you are allowed to make in this phase is where a thing physically lands.

Set up four zones as you unload:

• Keep — things you have used in the last two years
• Donate — usable, clean, someone else would want it
• Haul — broken, rotted, obsolete, or you have not touched it since you moved in
• Hazardous — paint, solvents, pesticides, oil, propane, batteries (more on this below)

An empty garage is also the only time you will realistically sweep it, check for water intrusion along the base of the walls, and see what shelving you actually have.

Saturday Afternoon: The Honest Pass

Now go through the Keep pile again, and be harder on it than you were the first time. The useful test is not "could I use this?" — almost anything passes that. It is "have I used this, and would I buy it again today?"

The usual suspects that people keep and should not: paint cans with two inches left in them, the second broken string trimmer being kept for parts, exercise equipment that has been a clothes rack for three years, boxes that have moved house twice unopened, and cardboard being saved for a future move.

That last one is worth calling out — residential cardboard is free to dispose of at the Ada County landfill, so there is no cost argument for keeping a tower of flattened boxes.

Sunday Morning: Put Back Only What Earns It

Heavy things low, light things high, seasonal things at the back, daily things by the door. Anything you cannot assign a home to is a sign the Keep pile is still too big.

If you are buying shelving, buy it after this step, not before — you now know exactly how much you actually need, which is usually less than you thought on Saturday morning.

Sunday Afternoon: It Leaves

Donation run first, because Goodwill and Idaho Youth Ranch have cut-off times and will turn away anything damaged. Then the haul pile goes.

The Hazardous Pile: Do Not Skip This

Paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks and car batteries cannot go in general trash, and no legitimate junk removal company will take them either. Ada County runs a separate household hazardous waste program for exactly this. Set them aside on Saturday and deal with them separately — it is a short errand, not a project.

Latex paint is the common exception people ask about: if it is fully dried out, it can usually go in regular trash. Wet paint cannot.

What Makes It Stick

The garages that stay clear have one thing in common: a rule about what is allowed to live in them. Whatever yours is — nothing on the floor, or one shelf per category, or a hard limit on boxes — decide it while the garage is empty and the memory of the work is fresh.
