Short answer: between $79 and $165 in the Boise area, depending mostly on whether we have to come inside to get it and how many pieces it is. Here is the honest breakdown, plus the cheaper options if you would rather not pay anyone.
What a Couch Actually Costs to Remove
- $79 — couch already at the curb or in the driveway, ready to load, no stairs
- $89–$115 — couch carried out from inside the house, including upstairs or a basement
- $120–$165 — a sectional, or a couch plus a chair, loveseat or other pieces
Those are our real published rates, not a teaser number. You can see the full pricing table for how larger loads work.
What moves the price is almost never the couch itself — it is access. A sofa on a ground-floor living room ten feet from the front door is a five-minute job. The same sofa in a finished basement with a tight stairwell turn is a genuinely different piece of work. Sectionals price higher because they are effectively two or three pieces.
Why You Cannot Just Put It Out With the Trash
This catches people out constantly. Standard residential curbside collection in the Treasure Valley does not take bulky furniture. A couch will not fit in the bin, and setting it beside the bin does not get it collected — it just sits there, and in some neighbourhoods it earns you a code enforcement notice.
There is no municipal bulky-item pickup that covers it either. Whatever happens to that couch, someone has to physically load it into a vehicle and drive it somewhere.
The Cheaper Options, Honestly Assessed
Donate it — free, if it qualifies
Goodwill and Idaho Youth Ranch both accept furniture in the Treasure Valley. The bar is higher than most people expect: it needs to be clean, structurally sound, and free of rips, stains, pet damage and smoke or pet odour. A couch with a sagging frame or a torn cushion will be turned away, and you will have loaded and driven it for nothing.
Be realistic about yours. If you would not put it in a friend’s living room, it will not pass.
Haul it yourself — about $15 plus your Saturday
A single couch weighs far less than the Ada County landfill’s 1,035-pound minimum threshold, so you would pay the $15 minimum fee and nothing more. See our breakdown of Ada County landfill fees for the full schedule.
What that number leaves out: you need a truck or trailer, you need a second person, and you need about ninety minutes for the round trip to Seamans Gulch Road plus the scale queue. If you already have the truck and the help, it is genuinely the cheapest route. If you would be renting a truck or calling in a favour, the gap closes fast.
Sell or give it away — free, but slow
Facebook Marketplace and Buy Nothing groups move usable furniture, sometimes within hours. The catch is that you are now scheduling strangers to your house, and "free couch, you haul" listings have a high no-show rate. Works well when you are not on a deadline. Works badly when you are closing on the house Friday.
When Paying Someone Makes Sense
Roughly: when the couch is inside, when there are stairs, when you do not have a truck, when you are on a deadline, or when it is going to the landfill anyway because it is not donation quality.
It is also worth bundling. If the couch is coming out, the mattress in the spare room and the broken recliner in the garage may as well go in the same load — you are paying for the trip either way, and a quarter load at $120 to $165 covers several pieces. That is almost always better value than paying a single-item rate twice.
What Happens to It Afterwards
If a couch is still in good shape we route it to Goodwill or Idaho Youth Ranch rather than the landfill, and we will tell you that is what we are doing. If it is not salvageable, it goes to the Ada County landfill. We are not going to claim we recycle a broken sofa — there is no meaningful recycling stream for upholstered furniture, and anyone telling you otherwise is stretching it.
